How Long Will My Vision Be Blurry After LASIK?

The time post-operative blurry vision persists after LASIK surgery can differ from one patient to another.

Most commonly, patients experience a significant improvement in their vision as soon as the day after the LASIK surgery. You may discover that you can see the world with fresh clarity, with a visual acuity of 6/9 or even 6/6.

LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK, or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is a type of refractive surgery that corrects vision problems by reshaping the cornea, the clear front part of the eye. LASIK treats nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.

During LASIK surgery, a thin flap is created in the cornea. The surgeon then uses a laser to reshape the underlying tissue. The flap is then placed back, and the eye heals naturally.

Why is Vision Blurry After LASIK?

While LASIK is a safe and effective procedure, there is often a minor limitation in the early days post-surgery. Some patients experience a slight haze or fog at the interface where the corneal flap was created during LASIK surgery. This haze is typically reactionary edema or the body’s reaction to the surgery, and it can cause a temporary reduction in vision quality. But there is no need to be concerned. This haze usually clears up within a week with the right medications and proper care.

Also, the patient with high myopia or a high negative prescription may experience a temporary change in their vision during the first few days post-surgery. They might find that they are facing difficulty in near work.  This is because the eye’s muscles adapt to optics or the refractive system of the eye, wherein they have to make some effort in focussing for near. The eye muscles need time to “reset” to their new default position, and this adjustment can take up to a week or even 10 days.

By the end of the first week after LASIK surgery, most patients experience a remarkable improvement in their vision. The haze at the interface clears, and those who have experienced temporary farsightedness will notice their vision returning to its optimal state.

Other possible causes for blurry vision may include dry eye, undercorrection or overcorrection, scarring and flap complication.

If blurry vision persists longer, or your vision gets blurry anytime during the 1st month after surgery, it is essential to consult your eye doctor immediately. Your doctor will examine your eye and determine the cause of blurry vision.

How to Avoid Blurry Vision After LASIK?

  • Choose a skilled eye specialist in Delhi who is experienced in performing LASIK.
  • Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. These instructions may include using prescribed medications and eye drops.
  • Avoid prolonged screen time in the days after LASIK eye surgery.
  • Wear eyeglasses when going outside.
  • Don’t rub or apply pressure on your eyes.
  • Avoid makeup or other products that may irritate your eye for a month

It is important to remember that healing takes time. Most people experience significant improvement in their vision within the first few days, while it may take time for others. Therefore, don’t get frustrated when your vision is blurry. Be patient and allow your eyes to heal properly.
